Do you think these names are unisex or more suitable for one gender?
Alex
Sam
Jordan
Madison
Ashley
Cameron
Taylor
Sydney
Angel
Riley
Bailey
Kayden
Dakota
Jadyn
Skyler
Jessie
thanks :)
Unisex names, or are they?
Alex is short for Alexander or Alexandra
Sam is short for Samantha or samuel
Jessie is a boys name
Jessie is a nickname for Jessica and a girl name
These names are nickname, could be either
Jordan could be either, it's in the top 100 in both girl and boys name
Madison is a top 10 girl name, way to common today for a girl
Ashley started out a boys name; Ashley is a top 20 girl name
Cameron could be either, I like this spelling for a boy, Kamryn for a girl
Taylor is a top 25 girl name, way to common for a boy
Tyler is a top 25 boys name, way to common for a girl
Sydney this spelling only a girl
Sydney could be a male
Angel could be either, could be a nicktname for Angelo, angelique, etc
Riley, is a top 50 girl name, way to common for a boy today
Ryan is a 20 boys name, way to common for a girl today
Bailey I know more dogs or people. Could be either
Kayden/Caden, etc is in the 100 boys at least twice; at least 3 more in the top 500. Way to common of a boys name for a girl
Dakota could be either, I like either
Jaden/Jayden/Jadyn is a boys name. A very common boys name. It'a a top 20 name with one of at least four spellings, and two are in the top 100. Way to common for a boy name
Jaelin/Jaelyn is way to common of a girl name, not matter the spelling for a boy
Skyler - could be either, I like Skyler and Skylar for a girl
I think using unisex names you need to make sure they are not that common of one sex. Or it's has a male/female spelling of the name
Reese is a unisex spelling
Reece is a male spelling
Reply:I'm going to the say what sex the name is most commonly used for NOW, even if they were used for the opposite sex in the past. The name Ashley, for example, was originally masculine but is not used almost completely for females.
Alex - Usually a nickname, boy or girl
Sam - Boy, nickname (Samantha) for girl
Jordan - Unisex
Madison - Girl
Ashley - Girl
Cameron - Boy
Taylor - Both, more for girl
Sydney - Girl
Angel - Unisex
Riley - Unisex, more for boy
Bailey - Girl
Kayden - Boy
Dakota - Girl
Jadyn - Boy
Skyler - Boy
Jessie - This spelling is a nickname for Jessica (so girl), the spelling Jesse would be for boys
Reply:My opinions :)
Alex - unisex, short for Alexander, Alexandra and Alexa.
Sam - unisex, short for Samuel and Samantha.
Jordan - boys name.
Madison - girls name.
Ashley - boys name (I know a lot of people will see it as a girls name, but it was originally a boys name).
Cameron - boys name.
Taylor - boys name (again, a lot of people will disagree, but oh well :P)
Sydney - old mans name, lmao
Angel - girls name
Riley - unisex?
Bailey - unisex?
Kayden - I have no idea. Sounds unisex though.
Dakota - girls name.
Jadyn - unisex?
Skyler - umm... haven't really heard this before.
Jessie - this spelling is a girls name. "Jesse" is the boy way.
Reply:I can imagine a boy or a girl answering to all of these names, so yes, I'd agree that they are used as unisex names.
That said, Madison has been so popular for girls, it would be cruel to bestow it on a boy. Ditto Ashley and Sydney, especially with that spelling. (Sidney still looks masculine to me.)
And I think it is a bit silly to name your daughter just Alex or Sam. They're great nicknames for girls, but I think she deserves something longer and more formal on her birth certificate - actually, I wouldn't put just plain "Sam" on my son's birth certificate either.
Reply:Alex- good for either, but usually as a nickname for either Alexander or Alexandra
Sam- same thing, for like Samuel or Samson, and Samantha or Samara
Jordan- either
Madison- I know it's like "son of" or whatever, but I like it for a girl
Ashley- girl
Cameron- boy
Taylor- either
Sydney- girl
Angel- girl, but I don't like it as a name
Riley- either
Bailey- girl
Kayden- boy
Dakota- either
Jadyn- boy
Skyler- either
Jessie- Jesse for a boy, Jessie short for Jessica for a girl

What's the matter gender police, afraid that you'll get confused as to your place in the binary. The main reason people resent gender neutral or unisex anything is because, we are socialized to see gender as a mutually exclusive dichotomy that one can either be on one side or the other. And when things appear to be ambiguous, or androgynous it runs up against years and years of near hardwired socialization and indoctrination of how our culture both perceives and experiences gender. This in turn confuses them, and people don't like to be confused, which is why their response is usually dislike, repulsion, or anger.
We assume that we can either be masculine or feminine, man or woman (not to be confused with male and female, as these are sexes, and man and woman are genders, one is anatomical, and the other is psychological) but that we can not encompass characteristics of both, or of genders outside of our contemporary scope. And when we encounter anything that does encompass "conflicting" gender signals or ques whether it be a name or a person's expression, or even concepts such as androgyne which contradict that primal base socialization of gender as a binary, or a dichotomous system we push it away from ourselves, and challenge its validity.
Reply:Alex- if you name her Alexandra
Sam- Yes but Samantha the full name or Sami Jo
Jordan- yes
Madison- totally girls name...who would name a boy that?
Ashley- both but to me a girls name
Cameron- both, if we have a girl it will be Kamryn
Taylor- both
Sydney- to me a girls
Angel- either
Riley- both but i like it better on a girl
Bailey- girl
Kayden- boy
Dakota- both
Jayden- both
Skyler- both
Jessie- both
Reply:Alex- yeah, unisex I guess. I actually prefer it for a girl as a nickname for something like Alexis.
Sam- I like it as a nickname for Samantha. But to just name a girl Sam on it's own would be a little weird.
Jordan- Eh. Not really bothered by it. Don't like it for either but I've met boys and girls called Jordan.
Madison- Actually did start as a boy's name. Meaning "son of Maude" but is now exclusively a girl's name. I personally, would be quite shocked to meet a boy called Madison now.
Ashley- This is more of a female name to me. I've met guys called Ashley (mostly in England I met them) but it's always had more of a feminine touch to me.
Cameron- I like it for both but prefer it on a boy as my baby brother's name is Cameron.
Taylor- I prefer this for a girl and have only ever met girls called Taylor.
Sydney- I see this as a girl's name but I have met guys with that name but spelled Sidney.
Angel- This just seems female to me, although I know Angel is a very popular male name, especially in the Hispanic culture.
Riley- I see this as more male. I really don't like it much for girls.
Bailey- I see that as female but I've met boys and girls called Bailey.
Kayden- Different spellings give a different vibe to me. Spelt like that it looks feminine, but spelt something like Caden looks male. Definitely unisex.
Dakota- Hm... It's too masculine for a girl but quite soft for a boy. I'm not really sure. We'll leave it in the middle and go for unisex.
Jadyn- I've never liked it spelt that way. I don't mind it as Jayden but I see it as male anyway. Never met any girl's name Jaydn/Jayden
Skyler- Definitely unisex. I've met girls and boys named Skyler/Skylar although most of the girls spelt it with an "a" while most of the boys spelt it with an "e".
Jessie- Jessie with an "i" in it looks like a nickname for Jessica, so female, but Jesse it the male spelling, like Jesse James, so definitely unisex.

Reply:They are "technically" unisex, but usually I think of a boy when I hear these names:
Alex
Sam
Riley
Bailey
Jessie
I think that names like Angel, Taylor, Riley, Kayden, etc are typically girls' names (even though I have a little boy cousin named Kayden!)

i think that madison, ashley, taylor, cameron, sydney, bailey, skyler and jessie are more so girl names
Reply:You forgot Jamie (my son) lol
I know males and females with most of these names. So I associate each name with a different gender, but they are unisex for a reason. So, they are suitable for each gender.
Reply:I don't like Madison for a boy and I don't like Skyler for a girl, and i don't like the name Kayden, but other then that I think the other names are pretty sutitable for both genders.
