Is Chelsea a unisex name in the US or not?

I've just moved from England to the US and start a new school next week. I got told that Chelsea is more common as a girls name in the US and that it isn't thought of as unisex. Is that true? My name is Chelsea and I am a guy so I was wondering about that and what people will think.

Is Chelsea a unisex name in the US or not?
It is generally a girl's name but don't worry. There are still males named Ashley and Kelsey which are also considered girl's names now.
Reply:I've never came across a guy who shares a name with me :-) .. Yes, a girl name here.. I wouldn't worry much about it though... like somebody else said, once you make friends, nobody will even notice ..and the british accent is definitely a saving factor :-P Report Abuse

Reply:I live in Australia.. and when i hear the name Chelsea i immediately think of a girl.. sorry bout that :( I think in the US you have a double whammy as not only is Chelsea thought of as a girls name, a previous President, Bill Clinton has a daughter who is named Chelsea. So, I think the Americans are very familiar with the name and are also used to hearing the name Chelsea in the news/media etc in reference to her.

Perhaps you could use a nick name or shorten it if it bothers you. i think once you have your own circle of friends they will get used to your name as Chelsea and no longer even think about it.. I wouldn't worry about it too much.. :)
Reply:Unfortunately, Chelsea is almost exclusively a girl's name here in the US. However, as others have pointed out you can always tell people that it is a "very popular boy's name in Europe." Depending on what age you are and how diverse an area you have moved into it may not even be an issue. I live in a college town and we have a very diverse population so we see all sorts of names here that would be considered "weird" or unusual a mere hour's drive south and no one really thinks twice about it.
Reply:it is technically a unisex name, but it is VERY uncommon as a boys name here in the US.you might want to try introducing yourself by a nickname to avoid any conflict with idiotic jerks. maybe you could introduce yourself as Chell a kid in my class is named Chelvakelmen and he goes by Chell or Cell. you could also try using your middle name. alot of kids do that in the US. good luck and ignore any jerks who give u any S*** about your name!
Reply:Eh its ok, but it is very girly around here, but its where your from and no one can change that.

There are people out there that are named really badly

Take your name as something unique and different and uncommon for a boy. At least its not Charlie, many many many people name their kids Charlie in the UK, isnt that where you are from??
Reply:yes it is a girls name, but on the positive side, if you ever decide to opt for a sex change, you wont have to change your name
Reply:Sorry man its a chicks name. Get people to call you chel, dont tell em what its short for. keep em wondering. If you intro yourself that way when you first meet em they'll be none the wiser. peace bro.
Reply:I've only ever heard Chelsea as a girl's name, but if anyone gives you any guff about it, just act very surprised and tell them that your name is 'very popular in Europe!'
Reply:Well yeah, it's as feminine as Teresa here.

But I'm pretty sure people will get used to it, and you probably got the awesome British accent, so nothing to worry about :)

Love Keke
Reply:ouchh unfortunately its a girls name

but if you face any problems

you could say its a really popular name in europe xD
Reply:Girls name only, but hey you can start a trend. Everyone is looking for new names these days.
Reply:in the US, chelsea is considered a girls name. i have never heard of chelsea being a guys name.
Reply:Chelsea is only a unisex name in the red light district...
Reply:no chelsea is not a unisex name in the USA, but you could give your self a nickname if it bothers you. like Chase or Chad some thing like that =)
Reply:NO it is only for a girl here most names that end in an a are strictly feminine I would go by Les from the get go and never tell any one the real name
Reply:It's predominantly a girl's name here.
Reply:Yea, Chelsea is definitely feminine in the US..yikes for you..
Reply:it is a predominately female name in the US but i think it wont matter that much.
Reply:Chelsea is a girls name here. IT ENDS IN AN A SOOOOO????
Reply:Girl.....
