Is "Mackenzie" a unisex name?

I was just wondering because I hav always liked the name Mackenzie Belle for a girl. But there is this Canada person telling me never to name my baby girl that because it is a boy name. So just wondering if it is. Thanks in advance!

Is "Mackenzie" a unisex name?
Well, the name prefix 'Mac' means 'son of', so it was traditionally a boy's name. But so were Ashley, Madison and Shelby.

Now it's almost always used for girls, and I prefer it that way.

PS: Was it Canada Here I Come that told you it was a boy name? If so, don't worry. She makes her living offending people, and has a negative opinion about all names but hers.

Reply:mackenzie is a great name for a girl or boy. if its a girl you can call her kenzie for short or if its a boy you can call him mack. but don't let anyone discourage you from any name you want for your child. everyone criticized me for naming my daughter summer ( actually her dads pick) because of the teasing she would get but she loves her name and takes it all in stride.
Reply:yes, it is a unisex name.

here in the states its primarily female,

but some males are named that and nicknames Mac or Mack.

dont let anyone decide your baby's name for you thought

if you like it, then go for it

as long as its nothing odd like avocado

ya know?

i mean hell, my name's Autumn, like the season, and i have no problem with it.
Reply:I know both guys and girls named Mackenzie, so I'm assuming it is considered a unisex name.

EDIT:

My husband knows several guys that are named Mackenzie. Some go by Mack for short. A guy friend of ours is named Mackenzie, so I now associate the name with a guy.
Reply:Yes, it is.

Mackenzie began as a last name, then became a boys' name, then a girls' name. It is still used as all three today.

Granted, it is more popular for females today, but I think the name still seems masculine, because of the "Mack" sound at the beginning of the name.
Reply:yes, Mackenzie is a unisex name, but it is almost always used for girls now. I love the name. It's kind of like Ashley and Shelby - both are unisex names, but you never hear of boys with those names nowadays.

Reply:It's a unisex name for sure!

I've known quite a few girls with that name, but I've also known some guys with that name, too.

It's just not as common with boys as it is for girls.
Reply:Mackenzie is unisex.

By the way, an American actress is named Mackenzie Phillips, so it is a girl'sname, too.

Reply:It technically is because of it's origin, but you very rarely hear any boys named MacKenzie anymore...It is definately a girl's name now.
Reply:Well, if it is not a unisex name you can make it one.

Lindsay

Kelly

Terry

Sam

Shawn

...and finally if you wish, MacKenzie.

Reply:Mackenzie is a last name, meaning "son of Coinneach"

I think it sounds odd as a first name for boys or girls, but seems very masculine to me.
Reply:I went to high school with a boy named McKensie. But I thought it was wierd that that was his name. I think it is VERY feminine and 100% a girl name.

That kid was wierd....
Reply:Yes, it can be either, it used to be just a girl's name until about the 19th century;Mackenzie Diane is pretty too!
Reply:I've never heard of a boy with that name. My sister is naming her baby girl McKenzie Ariana. She's going to go into c-section at 1:30pm. (I can't wait) :)
Reply:Mackenzie is both, male and female name. It sounds very feminine, though.
Reply:Not Unisex
Reply:I usually think of it as a girl's name, but I do know one boy named Mackenzie.
Reply:...mackenzie is a female name. Why are you listening to a Canadian?
Reply:Yes it is a unisex name but leaning more towards the girl side.
Reply:It's neither. It's a surname meaning 'son of Kenneth'.

Reply:Its a girls name in my book. I've never met a boy in my entire life with that name (except as a last name).
Reply:I've only heard it used as a female name... and I always think female when I hear it. It just has a feminine ring to it for some reason.
Reply:It means "SON of Kenneth". It should only be a boy's name. Girls are daughters, not sons.
Reply:Are you kidding me?? Mackenzie is a girl name!!!
Reply:I like it for a Girl but not Boy
Reply:i prefer Mackenna but both are girls names, and cute ones at that
Reply:Only heard of it being attached to a girls name aka. My niece middle name is McKenzie
Reply:Horrible name tbh! But yeah it's a boys name.
Reply:of course nawwt that guys is silly!

mackenzie would be a disgrace for a boy! they would get laughed at alot...
Reply:girl, by far
Reply:Yes it is...
