OK - To be clear - I am NOT asking if these are considered unisex, because they are all listed as being such (see above article). I am asking what your opinion is...

In your opinion, are these names unisex?
The only one I'd really consider unisex is Jamie. I generally don't like unisex names -- or the "boys names on girls" trend -- but Jamie is one of the few names that I think sounds good on either gender.

With Teagan, it depends on the spelling. The spelling you list would be a male name, but the spelling Tegan is a Welsh female name.

Same with Jesse -- I see this spelling as male, whereas Jessie could be a nickname for Jessica.

Some of the older names, like Lindsey and Courtney, were originally male names but are now exclusively used on girls. So, I don't think they've ever been unisex, it's more that the gender has changed completely.

I'm still unsure about the way I view the validity of a unisex name; language changes, and words can alter in meaning over time. So, even though Madison is, in structure, a boy's name (names ending in -son mean son of) if it is now exclusively used a girls name, does that make it a girls name? If the common usage of a word or name is different to its definition, is it the usage or the definition which is wrong?

Interesting question.

Reply:Most of them don't appear that way to me. Some seem strictly female and some strictly male, some unisex. But the list is too long for me to give examples... and maybe I've just never met anyone in my life yet with a name that I normally think is female or vice versa. :)
Reply:Names like Riley and Jesse can be unisex. To me, names like brittany and Shelley is just plain girl written all over it...

And Tristan and Teagon have boy written all over it.

Thats just my oppinion.
Reply:i def dont think those are all unisex.

Reply:No please don't name your son Wendy, Sue, Lindsay, Aubrey or Courtney!! That poor little boy would never be able to live those names down in school/work and life in general!
Reply:No not unisex there are names for both girls and boys but not unisex.
Reply:Most of those are obviously not unisex, not unless you want to torture your kid and ruin their childhood.
Reply:Nope. Not at all.

[Edit] Poster above, Aubrey is a masculine boy's name meaning Elfin King and is perfectly fine on a boy. If anything, parents should not name their daughters that.
Reply:Some are and some aren't
Reply:No they are not. Never met a guy named Wendy before.

Reply:Ashley- Unisex. This name actually started off as masculine, and then some idiot decided to name their daughter it, so now it is more feminine. I would actually name my son this if it weren't for the fact that mostly girls have this name.

Ashton- Male. I have no clue why people name their girls this. And they spell it "Ashtyn", which doesn't make it any better.

Aubrey- Masculine. In general, I hate this name for boys and girls.

Brittany- Female

Beverly- Feminine

Brook/Brooke-Feminine ( but its only spelled with the e at the end)
