Does anyone know if the surname of Hamilton can be used as an unisex name?

I wouldn't use it for a girl.

Does anyone know if the surname of Hamilton can be used as an unisex name?
What would be the nickname? Hammy? As in the plate at Denny's "Moons Over My Hammy"?

Better to use it as a middle name.
Reply:I suppose it can be, but that doesn't mean it should be. IMHO, surnames should not be used as first names, and I am not a fan of unisex names anyway.
Reply:I knew a male Hamilton in high school but I couldn't see it being used for a girl
Reply:Sure, why not?

I like that name!
Reply:sounds only male to me

Reply:I wouldn't name my girl that but maybe a middle name for a boy.A good unisex name is Kim good for boy or girl
Reply:You can name you're child anything you want. Hamilton is a great name, but think about nicknames if it is a girl. Or maybe use it as a middle name (my husband and I are going to use his maternal family name as a middle name no matter the sex of the baby)
Reply:I have never heard of it being used for a female, and frankly, I am not crazy about it for a boy either. I think the trend of using surnames as first names is dying quickly (but not quickly enough).
Reply:For a first name? Suuuurrree!!!!! Why not? It would be unusual and unique!

For a girl: Hamilton Grace--call her Milly!

For a boy: Hamilton James.

Good luck!
Reply:Naw, don't like Hamilton for a first name. Not at all for a girl, and for a boy it's like a spoiled rich kid's name.
Reply:Are you looking for opinions? Because certainly you can name your baby whatever you want (in America that is, some countries do have laws about that...). When you say that you wonder if it can be "unisex", I assume you mean can it work for both sexes. That all depends on whether you are trying to find a unique name and are willing to put up with a bit of baggage. It would work fine for a boy but a girl may struggle with it growing up. Of course, at one point the name "Taylor" was strictly for boys and now it is much more common for girls. You might be starting a new trend!
Reply:Well, to my it sounds like an elephant name.
Reply:Nice for a male but not for a female.
Reply:Sweetie u can name ur baby whatever u want. an asian couple is trying to name their child @
Reply:Maybe as a middle name for a girl. I would be prepared for her to hate it though. I knew 2 girls in high school whose middle names were a surname that sounded very masculine. They both hated it and couldn't wait to change it when they were old enough. For a boy, it's an okay name. It sounds a little stodgy, but it's okay.
Reply:I would feel really bad for the little girl in school named hamilton...I wouldnt do it
Reply:Hamilton is a last name.

Can you imagine a child with the name of Hamilton, esepcially a little girl? That would be horrible.
Reply:I think Hamilton is dreadful for a first name for a boy, let alone a poor little girl.
Reply:Well, since it's a surname it can be used for what ever you want because it's not really a given name. I wouldn't name a girl Hamilton though because it is too masculine. I would keep it in the middle name spot if it has significance for you. The only person I know who has Hamilton as a name, other than a surname, is a woman whose middle name is Hamilton. If it has no significance I wouldn't use it because it's a surname.
Reply:Never heard of Lady Hamilton?
Reply:i don't think it's unisex. i think it would a great boy's name or maybe even a girl's middle name (olivia hamilton smith or whatever). in fact in many cultures, it is custom to use the mother's maiden name as the children's middle name.
