Are unisex names common in England?

I know they are in America, but I don't know if they in the UK, would naming a girl Blake, Dylan or Mason cause problems do you think?

Are unisex names common in England?
Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn - they were known as "He-Evelyn" and "She-Evelyn".
Reply:there are unisex names, for instance Alex (for Alexander or Alexandra), Georgie (for George or Georgina) etc ... so they are around but I wouldn't necessarily say they're "common" ... the names you give (Blake, Dylan, Mason) are not common here in England (I don't know anyone with any of those names) but these days people are giving their children such unusual names that I doubt anyone would blink an eyelid ... in fact at work, on the form I have for taking down family details, I've added an extra column for the children so I can put down whether they're male or female because often it's very hard to tell from the name what they are

Are unisex names common in New Zealand?

They are in America, but I don't know if they are in NZ, would a girl named Dylan, Elliot or Blake ever get strange comments or anything?

Are unisex names common in New Zealand?
I would disagree with the person above actually - I think unisex names are very common here. I used to have a lot of clients all under the age of 20 (I managed children's trust funds) and a lot of them have unisex names.

However, those particular names you have mentioned are considered boys names here. Blake is probably one name which girls would have here but Dylan and Elliot are certainly boys. I am not sure if that makes sense - unisex names are common, those particular ones are not as unisex names.

Names like Taylor, Ashley Brooke (Brook), Robin (Robyn) etc are common. Admittedly Brooke and Robin aren't particularly unisex as their spellings differ depending on gender but people can't always be assured of that.

However, nicknames are very common here. And, the nicknames are often gender neutral. So, it is very very common to have people with names such as Stevie, Sam, Jack, Joe (although with an e is more common for boys it is becoming popular in girls names), Andy, Danny, Mike etc.

My particular group of friends all have quite girly full names. But together we are Andy, Sam, Jax, Jack and Tay.

No way of knowing who we are :)
Reply:Really? Well in NZ If a girl was named that it would be extremly odd (in my opinion) I've never meet a girl with those names you mentioned, would be weird to me lol.. There dead on boys names. After all these years of school don't see it much.. but I've seen like guys named Ashley and Ainsley. I knew the Ainsley and he changed his name to AJ but it's back to Ainsley now but he did get bad comments for it coz people would always be like oh yeah hes got a girls name... So no it's not very common and there would be some strange comments here and there...

What are your favourite unisex names?

I don't like many unisex names, I prefer names to be specifically masculine or feminine! Many names which are considered unisex (like Emerson, Ryan, Dylan, Aubrey, Cameron, Jordan, Logan etc.) seem too masculine for a baby girl, so I only like them for boys.

But here are a few I do like for both genders:

Jamie

Taylor

Alexis

Sam/Sammy, as a nickname for Samuel or Samantha

Reagan (boy) and Regan (girl)

Teagan (boy) and Tegan (girl)

Jaid (boy) and Jade (girl)

What are your favourite unisex names?

As far as liking unisex names, the only one I can think of is Shelby, probably one of the only unisex names I like on a girl.

What would be good unisex names for two parakeet birds?

On saturday, we are going to get some parakeets to move in with us.

lol

I was wondering what would be some cute names or just unisex names for little birds.

Or what would be a great female and male name for the birds.

I realize that I'm asking this question in this section and I'm doing it because it has people who may have creative names in mind tonight.

lol

Thanks!

Unisex names/naming a girl a boys name and vice versa?

I'd like your opinion on unisex names or naming a girl a boys name and vice versa. (Personally I think it's cruel to name your child a name of the opposite sex because other kids are mean and they will be teased, but that's just my opinon, please don't shoot me down in flames, I am entitled to have an opinion....be nice.)

Unisex names/naming a girl a boys name and vice versa?
I personally think it depends on the name. My husband and I are both Jamie's and I think it fits us both. I think Tony or Toni is good. Jordan can be for either and not sound bad. Jerry, and Geri are okay but getting a little on the boyish side. I think it just depends. But you are entitled to your own opinion and that is what makes us all great! We all think differently. That's why the world is in color and not black and white.... Have a great day.
Reply:Phoenix is a good strong name for either.
Reply:I personally don't like it. It just gets harder to name a boy.
Reply:I think it's a horrible trend. Kids already struggle with who they are, why do that to them? Parents push their children to be unique and succesful; naming them such a name isn't going to get them far. I cringe when I hear little girls being called Addison, Madison and Emerson. I also cringe at the names Jaden, Kaden, Braden, Kylie, Kaylee and nicknames (Kate, Abby, etc) as full first names. A name is something a child has to live with and grow with. Kaylee is adorable on a little two year old with pigtails, but not on a 40 year old woman trying to be taken seriously. I named my daughter Aleksandra (Polish spelling) and we call her Ally or Aleks. She has a cute nickname to fit her personality and a name she can be taken serious with when she's older.
Reply:My name is Carson, and I'm 34 years old.... It's normally considered a boy name (Carson Daley, Carson Kressley), though as of late unfortunately getting more popular among girls.... I was never teased about it.

I can understand not giving a boy a "girl" name, but I prefer a unisex name, or an outright boy name, for a girl. I am sooo sick of people going on how the kid will be teased, kids are mean blah, blah, blah.... I got all kinds of crap for my LAST name, and I'm not scarred by it.

BTW - I still LOVE Garrett for a girl! Let the thumbs down begin!
Reply:I think it depends on the name

Lesley for a boy, bad, it may be a unisex name, but it's a girl name

Hunter for a girl, bad, it may be unisex, but it's a boy name

Riley I love for a girl and Ryan for a boy

Taylor for a girl, and Tyler for a boy

Jordan, either

Avery, etiher

Jaycee, I like better for a girl, either

Hayden, I like for a girl, either

Harley, Both

Morgan, both, I like for a girl

I think it depends on the name. Some names should be only for one sex.
Reply:I think it's okay for a girl to have a "boys" name (ie. Jordan, Ryan, etc.), but I think it's not a good idea to give a boy a "girl" sounding name (ie. Gabriel, Adrian, etc.). They'd get beat up.
Reply:I think itz cute for girls to have certain boy names such as....Jaden, Jalen, Jordan, Taylor, Cameron, etc....names that don't sound too masculine.
Reply:Alex, joe, ashley

What is your opinion on Unisex names?

Do you like them? Hate them? What's your take on them?

What is your opinion on Unisex names?
My daughter's name is Peyton so I am biased an think it's the best unisex name! LOL! We also chose Brynn for our second daughter which is another unisex name. I agree that a masculine name on a female is more becoming than a feminine name on a male. I think people tend to look at a female with a masculine name as strong and independent! I like them for girls but not for boys!
Reply:I have always loved boy names for girls-not so much the other way around but I think you need to ask someone with a unisex name to see how they like it and how it's affected them in their life.

My father's name is TERRY LEE and he HATES unisex names. He hated going into a meeting where they were expecting a woman or getting mail addressed to MS. Terry Lee.
Reply:i don't really like them. Example, I think Pat is more for a male than a female, I've also heard of males named Courtney and I think that is totally a girls name. Jordan and Adrian I would say are also for males, even though those are common unisex names.
Reply:I kinda like Unisex names.

They are so universal.

And i dont know.

i love them

i also kinda like some boy names on girls

like

Rylie

Ryan

Blakely (girl version of Blake)

Erin

and some others. those are just some from the top of my head.

Reply:I have no problem with them....

It is funny when my daughter tells me a story about school and says it like this:

Cameron the girl one hit Aaron the boy one and Kelly the boy one said he doesn't like Hadlee the girl one.
Reply:some are okay. howver i personally dont like more masculine names for girls. names that i think are good for both are:

jordan

riley

adrian

taylor

payton

cameron

jayden

avery

Reply:I personally dislike unisex names like Jordan and Ryan but thats only my opinion so i hope i helped :)
Reply:I don't know... kids can be cruel. I like the name Hayden for a girl... Avery is pretty too. Payton is such a nice name (:
Reply:id say bailey ... i love that name...also camren , kasy, jamie, Ari..i hope i helped!!!
Reply:Avery %26amp; Ryan are boy names
Reply:I like them. My favorite is Ryan.

What do you think of unisex names for guys?

I was talking to a friend and we got into a discussion about guys with unisex names . What do you think?

The one that came up in or conversation is "Stacy"

To me Stacy is a girls name, not unisex.

Lindsey is a girls name too.

Although i've met a few guys with these names, and they seem very normal, i just wonder why people do this to their kids.

On the flip side, my wifes aunt is named Patricia, she goes by Patty, but hates when people call her "Pat"

I'm just curious what people think.

What do you think of unisex names for guys?
Parents who want to be , "oh so unique" and have an interesting name for their child......should spend a week introducing themselves to people using that weird name to see what sort of reaction they get.

Then imagine your kid in school, surrounded by a pack of bullies.........about to have the crap kicked out of him because some retard named him Leslie, or Stacy---because they thought it would be "cool" to have a unisex name.
Reply:I don't think anything is wrong with those names but I wouldn't name my children them. I don't want them growing up confused about their gender :)

Another that I am aware of is Jackie.
Reply:Alice, Terry, Tracy, Chris (Chrissy) are also unisex names.
Reply:Would not be caught dead naming my son stacy.lol. He would get his butt beat errday around here. I keep it gully.

What are some of the best unisex names?

I'm writing a story and i have to name a set of twins (one boy + one girl) and i needed your help on names. I want the unisex name to be kind of masculine and if you want to suggest a boy's name to go along with the girl's i'd much appreciate it.

Obviously the girl and boy names have to go together

What are some of the best unisex names?
Cameron and Casey

Jaimie and Jay

Sydney and Lyndsey

What is with the trend for unisex-sounding names for children?

What do you think of this trend? Why are names like Madison, Riley, or Jaden so popular now? Instead of like before when you could tell what the gender of the person was, like, for example, Jennifer (clearly a girl) or John (clearly a boy).

What is with the trend for unisex-sounding names for children?
I hate it. These names aren't unisex, they are boys names that people have commandeered for their daughters. I get that they want strong names for their daughters, but boys names are a stupid choice IMO. Fine don't name your daughter something uber-femme but at least use a name that is meant for a girl!
Reply:Im not a big fan of unisex names...I like that just by knowing the child's name you'll know whether it's a girl or a boy.

As for the trend I think actually more and more people are using the unisex names for a certain gender more than the other- Maddison is now clearly a girl's name, Riley is now a girl's name, Jaden is more of a boys name, Cameron is also more of a boys name... and the same with others..

I dont like giving unisex names to kids, because when they grow older they might be teased about having a girl/boy name, or they might feel bad about it.

My kids have very gender specific names
Reply:The problem is, a lot of people disagree on what the word unisex actually means. I would say that if half of the general population feels it's a boy's name, and the other half feels like it's a girl's name, then it's probably unisex. (Examples are Riley, Jordan, and Peyton. These three names are literally split right down the middle.)

But names like Ashley and Madison? Even though they both originated as male names ("son" obviously means male), they have been on the Top 100 Most Popular Girls Names since the 1970s, clearly making them better choices for little girls. This is what people don't get.

It doesn't matter if it "started out" as a male's name. If society has created a trend such that little girls are now named Ashley and Madison and little boys are NOT, then they ARE girls' names. They are not unisex.

The name Jaden/Jayden is on the Top 100 Most Popular Baby Names for girls AND boys, which would lead me to assume that is unisex. (Even though it is ranked in the Top 20 for boys, and doesn't show up for girls until about the Top 60s or 70s.) Clearly, there are plenty of people naming girls and boys Jaden, Riley, and Taylor.

Anyways, I think that a reason that they are so popular is because often times people name a child after someone. (My friend Brittany named her son Jaden because her mother's middle name was Jade.) A lot of people follow this trend. My maiden name is Miller and I am very attached to it. Through my adolescence and adulthood, no one called me by my first name. It was always "Miller". So I considered naming my first born girl Miller, even though most people would agree that it is slightly more masculine. But it pays homage to my Dad and his side of my family. See what I mean?
Reply:Its not really so much of a trend. courtney and Stacey used to be boys names, Madison used to be a boys name. society is becoming more opened minded about many things, especially those concerning gender roles and norms. Name your kid what you will, but I don't think those that like unisex names are following a "trend". there have always been unisex names, it is just more accepted now because people are becoming less judgemental about that stuff.

Well...most people. Some on this site are really adamant about not getting any gender identities confused. Because I'm sure a little girl named Peyton is really gonna be confused on whether shes male or female...note the sarcasm.
Reply:i dont have any problem with it, infact i think people do that because they sounds cute. when there is a uni-sex name usually that name would be more common on one gender than the other. for example: the name Elliot - more common as a boy name than a girl name but it is also a cute name for a girl. and your right those names are very popular, i know about 4 people named madison
Reply:My children have unisex names. I have never had a problem with my girls being mistsken for boys. Whenever they hear the name, they automatically assume girl.

Its all a matter of personal taste too. Some like traditional, some modern.

I respect peoples choices and don't look down on them for having different tastes. Unless they get bizarre like some of these Hollywood stars get.
Reply:For biased reasons Madison is the only ''unisex'' names I can stand :-) It's the ''I want a unique name for my daughter ... I know, I'll name her Michael!'' thing that has the booming baby name trend in a mess. Unisex names are male names on girls ... Would the name Emily become unisex, if I named my son that? I don't think so !
Reply:I ask myself the same thing!

it's even worse when they have a uni-sex name and you can't tell if they are a boy or girl...that's happened to me haha

or the names that should be a distinct boy name or girl name

and they're being transformed into a uni-sex name
Reply:I dont know but i do know i dont like it

I love masculine sounding names for boys

and pretty , cute , sweet , diffrent names for girls
Reply:or moonbeam , starshine, or cattlecrossing
Reply:I think the most popular is Jordan or Taylor.
Reply:Cattlecrossing?!?! That's fantastic!! LMAO!!
Reply:I find myself asking the same question all the time :)(:
Reply:I don't know, but I don't like it.
Reply:well, i personally just liked the name Dakota and that's what we named our son. it's a dual name, doesn't bother me at all

Unisex names...How do you spell this name to look like it's a name for either for a girl or a boy?

Jaden, Jayden, Jadin, Jaiden, or what? What unisex middle name would you put along with it?

Unisex names...How do you spell this name to look like it's a name for either for a girl or a boy?
Jayden Lee for boy

Jayden Lea or Leigh for a girl
Reply:I think Jaiden, Sacha would be a nice name to go with it
Reply:If you use that name for a boy he better be tough, or he is up for a lot of a ss kickens
Reply:What about Jayce?
Reply:I soooooo think Jayden is ONLY for a boy!! I really can't stand those 'unisex' names where they take a name and 'try' to make it for both.

for a boy, i like it spelled Jayden
Reply:Jayden and Jaiden would be the way to go, though Jayden is more commonly used for boys.

You could always try Ashley for a middle name as well.

I'd love to hear what you end up naming it and how it all goes.

Reply:Jaiden Ray for boy

Jaiden Rae for girl
Reply:I would use either Jaden or Jayden. I've seen both for boys and girls. What about Taylor for a middle name? Or Cory (Corie). I've also heard the names Shannon or Courtney for both boys and girls. Dana, too.
Reply:I would go with Jaden.

Good Luck picking!
Reply:that's a terrible thing to do to a child. It's cute and in fad now but what about 20 or 30 years from now. How will it effect his/her life, job, prospects for advancement????
Reply:It might be unisex but it does sound like a girls name no matter what...unless of course you just call a boy Jay for short.
Reply:Jaidan, { Unisex spelling }

Jaidan Corey,

Jaidan Kealoha, {Kealoha means love.}

Jaidan Monroe,

Jaiden Darcy,

Jaidan Sage,

Jaidan Ezra,

Jaidan Asher, {Asher means Happiness}
Reply:I guess anyone of those would work...but I'm leaning toward Jadin.
Reply:What about Jaden for a boy and Jada for a girl? There almost the same name.
Reply:i dont like the name at all! It's kind of like the name Zoe, it was cute for a while but it went out of style fast.
