It's because so many people are for unisex names.
Reply:I personally don't like unisex names for girls, simply because they sound unprofessional and "cutesy". Evan is adorable for a six year old, but a girl is a woman for longer. Does Evan sound like a serious name? There are tons of strong names for women, and tacking a boys' name onto a woman just doesn't seem right.





It's irritating when people choose boys' names for girls simply because they want their daughter to be unique. There are girls' names out there that are unique and feminine; people don't have to name their daughters Tyler.
Reply:i think that some unisex names such as cameron are nice but so confusing. and also names such as jesse are confusing just for the fact that you're never sure if the person is male or female. so it may be awkward in possible situations when a person is expecting to meet a girl and it ends up being this six foot tall testosterone-pumped guy. i think that also having a unisex name may create problems such as teasing among young children.

I think naming a boy Lesley or Ashley is mean, even if it's a unisex name. I think some unisex names are use for one sex, and using them for the other is mean.





I think taking a boys name like Logan, and naming a girl that is bad.

Reply:Because most of them aren't unisex, but ignorant parents putting masculine boy names on their little girls. Take Madison, Addison, and Emerson. All very masculine, not only in sound but meaning. "SON of Maude", "SON of Adam", and "SON of Emery". And there's Ryan, meaning "Little KING".





Parents thinks it's so cute to put these horridly masculine names on their little girls. It's almost as if they want a little boy instead.
Reply:Because...they're ambiguous, expecially when they're babies, and you can't always tell whether they're a boy or a girl, and you ask so what's the baby's name in hopes of saying how he or she is so cute...You get oh my baby's name is Avery..answer back how cute the little fella is and get corrected that it's a girl.....short story long, it's ambiguous.

And it is bad for little boys who have to share their name with girls.

What are unisex people names in Latin?
The question is difficult to answer, if only because the naming conventions for men and women were not the same in classical Rome. A citizen male would have three names: a praenomen, which was like a first name; there were never all that many of them (these are names like Marcus, Gaius, Tiberius, Publius, etc.; a nomen, which was the name of his gens (typically translated as clan); and a cognomen, which generally designated a closer family unit within the gens, but could be given for other reasons (Marcus Tullius Cicero's cognomen came from an ancestor who had a wart like a chickpea - Latin cicer- on his nose). Further names could be given as honorifics because of some noble service.





So, let's take the name of a famous Roman - say, Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. This tells us that Publius is his praenomen, he's from the gens Cornelius, and that he's from the branch of the Cornelii that carries the cognomen Scipio. Africanus is a honorific name he was given because he defeated Hannibal in the battle of Zama, thus winning the 2nd Punic War on African soil.





So, how were women named? The feminine form of the gens name. Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus's daughter would be named.... Cornelia. His second daughter would be named... Cornelia Secunda. His third... Cornelia Tertia. Boring, isn't it?





Of course, that's not the only way women were named, but there was generally a gens name involved, and to my knowledge they're all of the first/second declension type, which means that they have separate forms for the masculine and feminine, which in turn means that the women and men would always have different names (even if they're different only by a couple of letters).





So my answer is a qualified no; there weren't any unisex names in Latin. Or rather, the gens names are unisex, but due to the inflected nature of Latin, they change their endings according to the person they're referring to.





Now, slave names are a different matter; I haven't read much on the subject, so I most certainly concede the possibility that certain slave names were unisex. What they might have been, I can't begin to guess.

Reply:there are unisex names, for instance Alex (for Alexander or Alexandra), Georgie (for George or Georgina) etc ... so they are around but I wouldn't necessarily say they're "common" ... the names you give (Blake, Dylan, Mason) are not common here in England (I don't know anyone with any of those names) but these days people are giving their children such unusual names that I doubt anyone would blink an eyelid ... in fact at work, on the form I have for taking down family details, I've added an extra column for the children so I can put down whether they're male or female because often it's very hard to tell from the name what they are
